Floodwaters
The floodwaters receded and the assessment of damage began. Many in our area of town had experienced flooding in their homes when Hurricane Harvey hit. As we entered homes and began the process of demolition, the pain in homeowners’ eyes grieved me. Their homes were meant to be safe havens, but the floodwaters invaded. Now their homes were filled with strangers helping in the process of cleaning and starting the repairs.
Perhaps things you thought safe proved otherwise. The money in your bank account wasn’t enough to cover that major unexpected expense. Your career path took a sharp turn due to

a layoff, economic downturn or world event. The doctor’s report altered your plans for the future. We all experience unexpected challenges in our life. How we deal with those changes reveals much about where we put our trust.
Psalm 20 encourages when challenges arise. This Psalm, written by King David, assures us of God’s saving work. The entire Psalm uplifts those walking through trials and challenges. A good summary is in verse 7, “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.”
We must cling to the promises of God in the midst of our challenges and remember II Corinthians 1:20, “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.” God is not slack concerning His promises and we can remain confident that He has our best in mind. In our struggles, He walks with us, providing for our every need. Hebrews 13:5-6 assures us, “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”” What a promise!
With that promise in mind, the next time you hit an obstacle in your life, do not allow it to trip you up and make you stumble. Use that obstacle as a stepping stone to something higher and better when you stand firmly on the promises of God. He will be with you every step of the way.
